Metcon

Why I like love it….

One of my clients asked me today Why I gave here 3 rounds of a combination of exercises in a 21-17-15 format. I explained to her my preferred style of training which is Metcon and why I believe it is the most effective training for a large majority of my clients. About 10 miutes later one of my coworkers asked me what my training philosophy was so I thought I would try and give a little breakdown of my not so sweet approach to kicking butt….

I define Metabolic conditioning workouts or MetCons, as a fast paced, high intensity workout completed in a short period of time that will challenge your cardiovascular capacity, speed up your metabolism  and rapidly burn fat. Metcons are usually two or three exercises performed for rounds. For example 5 pull ups,10 push ups, and 15 squats for as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes. Many of these workouts last only between 5 and 30 minutes and they can be very effective at burning fat because of their contribution to excess post exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Basically, these intense workouts create an “oxygen debt” that the body must repay even after you are finished with your workout so you will continue to burn calories throughout the entire day.

Metcons mimic sports by combining resistance training, interval exercise, old school calisthenics, bodyweight exercises, plyometrics, and explosive Olympic style movements in one workout. The workouts are fast paced and hard-hitting involving short rest periods.

I feel its safe to say, most of my clients highly dislike me for about 30 minutes….but I feel the love later 🙂

with that said…I’m off to Crossfit to get my butt kicked
